INTERVIEW NO 14

Mark

ENOUGH SLEEP
Mark_9

“I think it’s safe to say I or anyone has no idea what happens while we sleep. We definitely experience parts of our subconscious / unconscious minds retrieving or dumping bits of information maybe even from past lives.“

Mark is a photographer and director based in Brooklyn. He focusses on travel, portrait and architecture photography and works for really cool magazines and publications such as The Fader, Monocle, Vogue and many more. I stumbled over his work when I first saw the documentary he shot about a Sikh guru in Northern India who wraps himself the probably largest turban on the planet.

“I have had many recurring dreams, they seem to be the most lucid and real. I believe that those might be actually recalling glimpses of past lives. In the future I would like to learn how to lucid dream.“

WHAT ARE YOU DOING DURING THE DAY?

I am work primarily as a photographer. I photograph mostly travel, portraits and architecture for a variety of editorial clients.

WHAT TIME DO YOU USUALLY GET UP?

This all depends, I used to wake up really early to meditate daily usually around 4:30 to 6AM. I would finish and go back to sleep for an hour after. But lately I’ve been very lazy, and really enjoying my dream life so I’ve been getting up around 7-8AM. I am not a early bird or a morning person, but I love the stillness of the very early morning. I prefer evenings and late night.

HOW DOES YOUR ALARM SOUND?

Cosmic.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THINGS YOU DO IN THE MORNING?

Space out for a 15 minutes. Then gotta get my music or podcasts going, make some fresh french pressed coffee followed by a smoothie.

DO YOU LIKE HAVING BREAKFAST? AND WHAT DO YOU HAVE?

I never eat breakfast first thing, I usually drink a smoothie and go straight to work, and maybe later grab a bagel with tofu cream cheese.

WHAT TIME OF THE DAY ARE YOU MOST PRODUCTIVE?

Late night I seem to get into a very deep obsessive work mode zone easily.

WHERE DO YOU SLEEP BEST?

In my bed, but I’ve trained myself to sleep anywhere.

YOU TRAVEL A LOT, DO YOU ADJUST EASILY TO DIFFERENT TIMEZONES?

When traveling, I sleep when possible, and try to rest a bit when I arrive where I am going. My tip for overcoming jetlags: Try to be the last person on the plane, so you can take a unoccupied row so you can lie down. This past year I flew from LA to India, stopping in Abu Dhabi it was hell. I ended up sleeping on the ground for part of the flight.  Jet Lag is rough, If possible it's good to rest mid trip if there are two legs of the trip. It takes 10 days to recover from jetlag, our bodies and organs are just not meant to fly through the sky. Recovery and downtime are important.

DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR DREAMS?

I remember my dreams and quickly forget them. I have had many recurring dreams, they seem to be the most lucid and real. I believe that those might be actually recalling glimpses of past lives. In the future I would like to learn how to lucid dream.

HAVE YOU HAD AN IDEA IN A DREAM THAT YOU BROUGHT TO REAL LIFE?

Yes. Sometimes I will have a dream about someone and this can really influence my attitude towards them. Could that be my subconscious and intuition speaking or just my anxiety?

DO YOU CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU WEAR FOR SLEEPING?

I love being naked. I sleep naked when possible.

DESCRIBE YOUR BED IN 3 WORDS.

White, cozy, soft.

WHAT IS THE MOST SPECIAL SPOT YOU’VE EVER FALLEN ASLEEP.

I once fell asleep in White Sands, NM I camped out by myself, no one for miles. It was very surreal, I woke up having a dream I was being watched and couldn’t fall back asleep. I think that dream was actually suggesting something that was really happening, I think I was being watched. White Sands is controlled by the government and most of it is occupied by a military base.

WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS WHILE WE SLEEP?

I think it’s safe to say I or anyone has no idea what happens while we sleep. We definitely experience parts of our subconscious / unconscious minds retrieving or dumping bits of information maybe even from past lives. Not to get too out there but I also think we might travel to other realms.

HOW MANY SHEEP DO YOU COUNT?

I have no problem sleeping.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DREAM ABOUT TONIGHT?

Traveling the world, flying and sex.
