Eva & Ian

SLEEP
1-2-1024×819

“We’re night owls and find ourselves working in the evenings, often. There’s something about the peace of no one emailing you that makes it easy to get everything done.”

JULY 2017
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
INTERVIEW: VM

3-3

Eva: “I lucid dream often and so most nights, I’m flying around. It’s a bummer to wake up and realize that I can’t actually fly.”

5-1
6-1
7-1
WHAT ARE YOU DOING DURING THE DAY?

Eva: I’m Eva and I am the co-founder/CEO of maude, a modern sex essentials company. Together, we have a watch company called Tinker Watches.
Ian: Hey! I’m Ian and I’m an engineer / product manager at LG. We’ve been together for 10 years, married for 9.

ARE YOU AN EARLY BIRD?

Eva: I usually get up at 7am with no alarm, sometimes earlier if I’ve been worrying in my sleep (often). On the weekends, we sleep in until about 8 or 9, depending on the weather. I tend to lean over and sort of tap Ian awake. He’s a heavy sleeper.

HOW DOES YOUR ALARM SOUND?

Ian: They both sound like annoying bells. We haven’t changed them to something more pleasant, but maybe that’s why we wake up?

WHAT ARE THE FIRST THINGS YOU DO IN THE MORNING?

Eva: I brush my teeth and start the water for coffee. Then I feed the cats.
Ian: I throw on my shoes and put on our dogs’ shoes (don’t know what’s on those New York sidewalks). We all go outside so they can do their business and say good morning to the neighbors.

DO YOU LIKE HAVING BREAKFAST?

Eva: We have this great little egg steamer so we pop in a few eggs to the soft boiled setting, toast some bread and top it with good salt. It’s quick and easy.

WHAT TIME OF THE DAY ARE YOU MOST PRODUCTIVE?

Ian: We’re night owls and find ourselves working in the evenings, often. There’s something about the peace of no one emailing you that makes it easy to get everything done.

ANY RITUALS BEFORE GOING TO BED?

Eva: After the full grooming (wash face, brush teeth, put on face mask)? Well, we read on our phones, which is crap for getting your brain ready for sleep, but we like to catch up on the news and look at stories on The Dodo. Ok, well I look at stories on The Dodo. And then cry at least 5 times. In the winter, I’ll make tea.

DO YOU THINK YOU GET ENOUGH SLEEP?

Ian: No.
Eva: Because I wake up automatically, I feel like my body knows best. I don’t operate well on a lot of sleep anyway.

FAVORITE SLEEPING POSITION?

Eva: I like to sleep with my arms over my head. I just look dead, but it really does wonders for the back.
Ian: Also a back sleeper, but Eva says I snore so I try and sleep on my side.

WHERE DO YOU SLEEP BEST?

Both: Our house. The pups sleep on the foot of the bed and sometimes the cats perch on the bed frame and it’s just one big happy family.

DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR DREAMS?

Eva: I do. I lucid dream often and so most nights, I’m flying around. It’s a bummer to wake up and realize that I can’t actually fly.
Ian: I never remember my dreams :/

DID YOU EVER HAVE AN IDEA IN A DREAM THAT YOU BROUGHT TO REAL LIFE?

Eva: I’m still working on flying, but no. Most of my dreams are nonsensical.

DO YOU CARE ABOUT WHAT YOUR WEAR FOR SLEEPING?

Eva: I wear pajama sets every single night. I can’t remember a time that I didn’t wear matching pajamas. (Sleepy Jones, are you reading this?!). There’s something about it that makes me feel prepared to wake up the next day in order.
Ian: I’ll wear whatever is comfortable, but now, admittedly, I have a few pairs of matching pajamas. After 10 years, Eva convinced me.

DESCRIBE YOUR BED IN 3 WORDS?

Giant, peaceful, white.

WHAT IS THE MOST SPECIAL SPOT YOU'VE EVER SLEP IN OR FALLEN ASLEEP?

Eva: I slept under my desk at work once, many years ago. I think I was getting the flu or something and I just crawled under and took a nap. Very bizarre.
Ian: As Eva can attest, I am a cheap date so after one evening of imbibing, I fell asleep draped over the back of the couch like a melting Salvador Dali painting or something. I have no idea what happened.

WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS WHEN WE SLEEP?

Eva: You live out your wishes, fears, and all of the garbage you read on the internet that day.

EVER USED AN APP TO TRACK YOUR SLEEP?

Ian: No. Having two restless shih tzus in your bed doesn’t allow for accurate testing.
How many sheep do you count?
Both: Few. We like to let sheep roam around.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DREAM ABOUT TONIGHT?

Eva: The 2020 election.
Ian: Wouldn’t know since I never remember.
